The Weyburn project is essentially a coal based synthetic natural gas and chemical production facility in North Dakota with some CO2 captured and transported to the Weyburn oil fields in Saskatechewan, Canada, for use in EOR. It does not produce power. All the syngas Weyburn produces is exported by pipeline to the Mid-West.
The Hydrogen Energy California project is a facility producing hydrogen gas from both petroleum coke (an oil refining by-product) and coal, and then utilizing clean burning hydrogen to generate electricity, while capturing up to 90% of the carbon dioxide emissions that otherwise would be emitted into the atmosphere. The CO2 is pumped into adjacent, partially depleted oil reservoirs for permanent storage. In so doing the CO2 also facilitates enhanced recovery of remaining oil reserves.
