How much carbon dioxide can be stored in oil and gas fields?

In theory, there are sufficient storage basins (mature oil and gas fields and deep saline formations) worldwide that are potentially appropriate locations to store 1,000 years worth of CO2 produced from stationary sources.

In California there is a potential 3.4 Gigatons of CO2 storage capacity in oil and gas fields. (i.e. if this one project were to remain the only one in California, and it continued to operate long into the future, there would be enough storage for 850,000 years).
